It’s been a while since I’ve posted a review for Blogging for Books. I’ve had the book St. Peter’s Bones: How the Relics of the First Pope Were Lost and Found…and Then Lost and Found Again by Thomas J. Craughwell sitting on my bedside table since I moved into my new house…and for months in my old house before that.

I wanted to like this book, I really did. I love Saint Peter and, as a former Classicist who dreamed of being an archaeologist, I thought that I would enjoy the story of digging up the crypts under Saint Peter’s. I’ve even been down there, on the scavi tours in Rome, back in 2009. So, if anyone should have loved this book, it’s me.

But, I didn’t. The writing is dry, there are all kinds of references to scripture that any Christian would be familiar with. There was nothing revelatory about the book, at least the part that I read (I just couldn’t make myself finish it).

The problem isn’t the content but the author’s writing style.

Maybe others will enjoy this book. However, it was not for me.
