Although there are a few articles this week about things other than New Year's Resolutions, you may notice a definite theme. I'm really big on goals every year and so I read a lot of articles around this time on this particular topic. Enjoy!
Life and General Articles:
The 100 hour rule. (Modern Mrs. Darcy): Reading this article has kind of made me want to rethink the way that I spend my time. As a calligrapher and writer, I don't spend nearly enough time doing either of those things. I definitely need to up my practice time in calligraphy, which means I need to be more intentional about how I spend my time doing other things.
White man in the photo is the 'third hero' that night in 1968 (San Francisco Globe): Although I had never paid much attention to the photo in question, I thought this story about standing up for what is right in the face of great struggle was beautiful.
68 New Year’s Resolutions That Will Help You Own Your Twenties In 2016 (Buzz Feed): Some of these sound like great ideas! And not just for 20-somethings.
I Applied Marie Kondo's Theories of Tidying to my Kitchen, and here's what I Discovered (Verily): For those of us who made organizing and getting rid of things a resolution...
12 Unique Life Resolutions/Habits to Consider (Becoming Minimalist): I like these and think that they are probably good resolutions to have.
21 Lists You Need To Keep To Lead A More Satisfying Life (Life Hack): I'm a list maker, so these speak to me.
Books: It seems like a common New Year's Resolution is to read more. Here are some lists and articles to help inspire your reading list this year.
16 New Year’s Resolutions Only Book Nerds Can Relate To (Buzz Feed Books): I can definitely relate to some of these. I'm betting you can, too.
32 Books That Will Actually Change Your Life (Buzz Feed Books): While I haven't actually read all of these, I have enjoyed the ones I have and many of the others are on my to-read list. How many have you read?
In the age of Amazon, used bookstores are making an unlikely comeback (The Washington Post): Given the amount of time my friends and I spend in bookstores and the fact that those stores are NEVER empty, this doesn't really surprise me. I love Amazon, but you can never replace a good old fashioned bookstore.
#BustleReads Challenge 2016 Encourages You To Read Women And Writers Of Color (Bustle): Always a good idea and many of these will be covered by my reading list for my PhD this year. What about you? How can you diversify your reading?
Fountain Pens:
- Fountain pen enthusiasts come from an unlikely age group (Gainesville Times): A great article about how young people are coming to use fountain pens.
Catholicism and Spirituality:
- Some Lady Holding a Baby (Ashley-Anne Masters): Although Christmas is past, I thought this was an interesting read.
Education:
The Rise of the Hyper Educated Poor (Huffington Post): This article lays things out pretty well. Although it's depressing in many ways, for academics it is important that others understand the situation as well as that we are realistic about our future.
In Defense of the Humanities Ph.D.: It's No Crazier Than Becoming a Journalist (The Atlantic): And another, in a similar vein.
Environment:
- The Scariest Part of This Season’s Weird Weather Is Coming Soon (Slate): Because this is terrifying, true, and impacting a lot of people I love...
